What Experts Say
Cefixime suspension gives pediatricians a practical way to treat bacterial infections in young children who cannot swallow capsules. The liquid form allows the dose to be adjusted precisely to a child's body weight, which is important since children metabolize drugs differently than adults.
As a third generation cephalosporin, cefixime works by interrupting the bacterial cell wall formation process, causing the bacteria to rupture and die. It covers many organisms responsible for ear infections, throat infections and urinary tract infections seen in Pakistani children.
Parents are usually advised to complete the entire prescribed course even if the child feels better within a day or two of starting treatment. Stopping the antibiotic early is one of the leading causes of treatment failure and contributes to resistant bacteria developing in common childhood infections.
