Evofix Capsule 400mg Benefits
- Third generation oral cephalosporin with broad coverage of gram negative bacteria
- Convenient once or twice daily dosing improves treatment adherence
- Effective oral option for typhoid, reducing the need for injections
- Resistant to breakdown by many common bacterial beta lactamase enzymes
- Well absorbed from the gut, allowing outpatient treatment of many infections
What Experts Say
Cefixime works by binding to penicillin binding proteins and blocking bacterial cell wall synthesis, which makes it bactericidal against many gram negative organisms. Its stability against several common beta lactamase enzymes gives it a real advantage over many older oral cephalosporin options.
Dosing rationale generally favors a single daily dose for uncomplicated infections and a twice daily split for more resistant or deeper seated infections. Physicians emphasize completing the full prescribed course even after symptoms improve, since early stopping encourages resistant bacterial strains to develop.
Doctors adjust the dose downward in patients with reduced kidney function, since cefixime clearance depends heavily on renal excretion pathways. Caution is also advised in patients with a documented penicillin allergy, given a small but real chance of cross reactivity between the two related drug classes.
