About Exforge Tablet 5mg / 160mg
A once daily amlodipine and valsartan combination tablet for standard hypertension control.
Exforge Tablet Uses
- Controls high blood pressure in adults starting combination therapy
- Used when blood pressure is not fully controlled on a single blood pressure medicine
- Suitable as an early step combination for patients who need more than monotherapy but not maximum strength dosing
- Helps maintain steady blood pressure control with once daily dosing
Exforge Tablet Benefits
- Combines two complementary blood pressure lowering mechanisms in one tablet
- Lower starting amlodipine dose reduces the chance of ankle swelling and flushing
- Once daily dosing is easier to follow than taking two separate tablets
- Supports long term protection of the heart, brain and kidneys from high blood pressure damage
What Experts Say
Amlodipine relaxes blood vessels by blocking L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, while valsartan blocks the angiotensin II AT1 receptor to prevent vasoconstriction and reduce aldosterone release. This dual mechanism lowers blood pressure more consistently than either drug used alone.
The 5mg / 160mg strength is commonly used as a starting combination dose for patients who need more than one blood pressure medicine but do not yet require the higher 10mg amlodipine component. The lower amlodipine dose carries a reduced chance of dose related ankle swelling while the full 160mg valsartan dose still provides strong angiotensin blockade.
Doctors typically check kidney function, blood potassium and blood pressure response within a few weeks of starting this combination, especially in older adults or those with reduced kidney function. Anyone who becomes pregnant while taking this medicine should stop it and contact their doctor immediately, since angiotensin receptor blockers can harm a developing baby.
Drug Class
