What Experts Say
Gastroenterologists describe esomeprazole as one of the most reliable proton pump inhibitors for controlling stomach acid. It blocks the enzyme pump in the stomach lining that produces acid, giving the esophagus and stomach lining time to heal. Clinical guidelines list it among first line options for GERD and ulcer healing.
Medical experts caution against long term use without supervision. Extended PPI therapy has been linked to reduced vitamin B12 and magnesium absorption, along with a higher risk of gut infections. Most treatment courses run four to eight weeks, after which doctors reassess whether continued therapy is needed.
In Pakistan, many patients buy esomeprazole over the counter for mild indigestion without a proper diagnosis. Pharmacists and physicians increasingly advise against this habit, since untreated acid reflux can mask more serious conditions like ulcers or, rarely, early stomach changes that need timely evaluation.
