What Experts Say
Cefixime works by stopping bacteria from building their protective cell wall, which causes the bacteria to die off. Doctors favor this cephalosporin for children because a once daily dose is easier for parents to manage than antibiotics that need three or four doses a day. Its stability against many bacterial enzymes also makes it useful for infections that resist older, narrower spectrum antibiotics.
Pakistan carries a high burden of typhoid fever and recurrent urinary tract infections in children, and physicians often rely on oral cephalosporins like Cefixime when a child cannot tolerate injectable treatment or when outpatient management is appropriate. Culture and sensitivity testing helps confirm the right choice, since resistance patterns can vary between regions and change over time.
Doctors generally ask parents to complete the full course even after fever and other symptoms settle, since stopping early allows surviving bacteria to multiply again. A follow up visit is recommended if symptoms persist beyond 72 hours, so the treatment plan can be reviewed and adjusted if needed.
