What Experts Say

Cyclobenzaprine acts on the brain stem to reduce muscle spasm signals. It does not act directly on the muscle. It is chemically related to tricyclic antidepressants.

It is meant for short term use, usually two to three weeks, together with rest and physical therapy. Studies show benefit mainly in the first few days after an injury. Longer use has little added benefit. Common side effects such as sleepiness are usually dose related, which is why the lower 5mg strength is often started first. Taking it at night can make daytime drowsiness less of a problem.

Drowsiness and dry mouth are the most common effects. Older adults are more sensitive, so lower doses are preferred. Alcohol and other sedatives should be avoided while taking it. How to use Flexagil tablet 5mg?

• Take Flexagil as prescribed, usually up to three times daily.
• Swallow with water, with or without food.
• Avoid driving until you know how it affects you.
• Do not use it for more than the period your doctor advises.

Drug Interactions

• MAO inhibitors: These must not be combined, or taken within 14 days of each other, due to serious reactions.
• Antidepressants, tramadol and other serotonergic drugs: Together they can raise the risk of serotonin syndrome.
• Alcohol and sedatives: These add to drowsiness and slow breathing.
• Anticholinergic drugs: These can increase dry mouth, constipation and urinary problems.

Risks and warnings

• Drowsiness: It can cause sleepiness and slow reactions, so avoid driving and alcohol.
• Heart conditions: People with rhythm problems, heart failure or a recent heart attack should not use it.
• Overactive thyroid: It is not advised in hyperthyroidism, so tell your doctor beforehand.
