- Allows a gradual, better tolerated introduction to nitrate treatment
- Suitable lower strength for patients sensitive to blood pressure drops
What Experts Say
Isosorbide mononitrate belongs to a family of long acting organic nitrates that release nitric oxide once absorbed into the bloodstream. Unlike isosorbide dinitrate, it does not need to be broken down by the liver first, so its effect on blood vessel width is more predictable from one dose to the next and less likely to vary between patients.
A 10mg strength is commonly the starting point when a doctor introduces long term nitrate treatment for angina, since it lets the body adjust gradually to the drop in blood pressure before moving to a higher maintenance dose. It also suits older patients, those with a smaller body frame, or anyone who reports marked dizziness on standing.
Like every nitrate strength, this dose still carries the same core safety rules. It should never be combined with erectile dysfunction medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil, and doses need to be spaced correctly each day so the body does not build tolerance and lose the protective effect over time.
