Mefenamic acid is an NSAID that blocks the enzymes making prostaglandins. These chemicals drive pain, fever and uterine cramping, so lowering them eases all three. It is widely used in Pakistan for period pain, and it works well when started at the first sign of cramps. Pain relief usually begins within an hour of the dose.

The 500 mg strength is a prescription dose, usually taken three times daily after meals. Food lowers the chance of stomach upset, and a short course of up to 7 days is advised. Longer use raises the risk of stomach, kidney and heart problems. Water and a full stomach also help.

It is not suitable for people with ulcers, serious kidney disease or aspirin sensitive asthma. During dengue season, NSAIDs can raise bleeding risk, so paracetamol is preferred for fever. How to use Kamic Tablet 500mg?

• Adults and children over 14 years: one Kamic 500 mg tablet three times daily after food, as prescribed.
• For period pain, start at the first sign of pain or bleeding and continue for 2 to 3 days.
• Do not use for more than 7 days without medical advice.
• Swallow the tablet whole with water and do not exceed the prescribed dose.

Drug Interactions

• Aspirin and other NSAIDs: Together they raise ulcer and bleeding risk.
• Warfarin and blood thinners: Mefenamic acid may increase the bleeding risk.
• ACE inhibitors, ARBs and diuretics: It may weaken their blood pressure effect and strain the kidneys.
• Lithium and methotrexate: Mefenamic acid can raise their blood levels and cause toxicity.
• Corticosteroids: Using them together increases the risk of stomach ulcers.

Risks and warnings

• Stomach bleeding and ulcers: Mefenamic acid can irritate the stomach lining, so take it after food and avoid long use.
• Kidney problems: It may reduce kidney function, especially with dehydration or existing kidney disease.
