What Experts Say
Lisinopril belongs to the ACE inhibitor class and works by blocking the angiotensin converting enzyme, which normally narrows blood vessels. This action relaxes and widens blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and reducing the workload on the heart.
Large clinical trials have shown ACE inhibitors like lisinopril lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in patients with heart failure or after a heart attack. Guidelines recommend it as a first choice for many adults with high blood pressure, especially those with diabetes or early kidney disease, since it also slows the progression of diabetic kidney damage.
Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood potassium is advised, particularly in the first few weeks and after dose increases. Lisinopril should be paired with a low salt diet for best results, and patients are advised not to stop the medicine suddenly since blood pressure can rebound. Mild dizziness during the first days is common and usually settles as the body adjusts.
