About Latep Drops 0.005%
Latep Drops contain latanoprost, a prostaglandin analogue used to treat open angle glaucoma.
Latep Drops 0.005% Uses
- Lowers raised intraocular pressure (eye pressure) in open angle glaucoma
- Treats ocular hypertension to reduce the risk of optic nerve damage
- Used long term to slow vision loss caused by chronic glaucoma
- Sometimes prescribed after other eye pressure lowering drops fail to control pressure alone
Latep Drops 0.005% Benefits
- Needs only one drop a day, making it easier to use consistently than multi dose drops
- Effectively lowers eye pressure by improving the eye's natural fluid drainage
- Helps protect the optic nerve and preserve remaining vision in glaucoma patients
- Well studied with decades of clinical use in glaucoma management worldwide
What Experts Say
Doctors typically prescribe one drop in the affected eye every evening, since latanoprost has a long duration of action and more frequent dosing does not improve pressure control but can reduce its effectiveness. Consistent evening timing helps maintain steady pressure reduction overnight.
Physicians recommend regular eye pressure checks and optic nerve monitoring during long term latanoprost therapy, since glaucoma is a silent, progressive condition with few early symptoms. Iris colour changes and eyelash growth are watched for during routine follow up visits.
As a prostaglandin analogue, latanoprost works by increasing uveoscleral outflow, the eye's secondary drainage pathway, rather than reducing fluid production like older glaucoma medicines. This mechanism makes it effective even in patients who respond poorly to beta blocker eye drops or cannot tolerate their systemic side effects.

Drug Interactions
- Thiomersal Containing Eye Drops: Using other eye drops with thiomersal preservative at the same time can cause precipitation; separate dosing by at least five minutes.
- Other Prostaglandin Analogue Eye Drops: Combining with similar drops is not recommended, as it can paradoxically raise eye pressure instead of lowering it.
- Systemic Beta Blockers: Can be used alongside but effects on eye pressure should be monitored by a doctor.
Risks and warnings
- Iris Pigmentation Change: May permanently darken the iris colour, especially in patients with green brown or blue brown mixed coloured eyes.
- Eyelash Changes: Can cause eyelashes to grow longer, thicker, and darker over time.
- Eye Irritation: Temporary stinging, redness, or a foreign body sensation is common right after application.
- Macular Oedema Risk: Use with caution in patients who have had cataract surgery or lack a natural eye lens.
