What Experts Say
Quetiapine works on several brain chemical receptors, mainly dopamine and serotonin. By blocking these receptors, it reduces the overactive signaling linked to hallucinations, delusions, and mood instability. At lower doses, its effect on histamine receptors also produces a calming, sleep-inducing effect.
Psychiatrists usually start quetiapine at a low dose, often 25mg, and increase it gradually over days or weeks to reduce dizziness and sedation. This slow titration is why the 25mg strength exists, mainly for starting treatment or fine-tuning a higher dose. Regular blood sugar, weight, and cholesterol checks are recommended during long-term use.
Mental health conditions still carry stigma in many households, so patients sometimes stop taking quetiapine once they feel better without consulting their doctor. Stopping suddenly can trigger a relapse or withdrawal symptoms like nausea and insomnia. Because this medicine needs careful dose adjustment, it should never be shared or self-prescribed based on someone else's prescription.
