What Experts Say
Physicians favor the controlled release formulation of paroxetine because it releases the drug gradually into the bloodstream, reducing the nausea commonly seen with immediate release tablets. Doctors usually start therapy at the lowest dose and titrate slowly over several weeks based on response.
Clinicians monitor patients closely during the first weeks of treatment, since SSRIs can temporarily increase anxiety or agitation before mood symptoms improve. Physicians recommend tapering the dose gradually rather than stopping suddenly, since paroxetine carries a relatively higher withdrawal risk among SSRIs.
Doctors weigh the benefits of symptom control against individual risk factors such as bleeding tendency, pregnancy status and other serotonergic medicines before prescribing this treatment. Physicians recommend regular follow up visits to track mood, side effects and the continued need for therapy.
