Melanoma problem

Asked for Female, 65 years

My mother was diagnosed with melanoma on her hand and it had spread to the eye. She is on chemotherapy but was also told to get surgery for her “intraocular” melanoma. Im confused as wouldn’t chemotherapy work for the eye too? please respond

Dear Patient,

Ocular Melanoma usually does not respond well to standard chemo drugs. Chemo is used only when cancer has become widespread. If chemo is used, the treatment is generally the same as for melanoma of the skin.
Newer targeted drugs, which work in different ways from chemo drugs, have shown some promise in treating skin melanomas in recent years, and are now being studied for use against eye melanomas. But so far there hasn't been any known treatment as effective as surgery for ocular melanoma. Do discuss with your doctor the success rate of surgery and risks and the benefits. Good luck!
