Throat Infection

Asked for Female, 9 years

My daughter had developed 100 degree of fever. I took her to doctor the next day who said there is mild throat infection. Her fever escalated and wasn't reducing. I started to give her antibiotics but I was told not too. Are these antibiotics really not good for our kids? Should we let them suffer in pain by avoiding them? Please guide me.

Dear Patient,

There are specific reasons for giving diff meds for diseases. When an infection starts it's normally “viral'. Viruses are normally self-limited i.e they come and go themselves. Meanwhile, you give treatment for fever or pain and give support to the body to heal. Often, a “bacteria superimposes' ie comes n joins virus. It is then that an antibiotic is needed. The time is taken to wait isn’t to sit and watch only. Often, the body heals due to natural immunity unless bacteria comes. Unnecessary antibiotics weaken the body.
