What is Bawaseer?

Bawaseer, also known as piles or hemorrhoids, is a condition in which the veins of the rectum or lower anus get swollen up. They appear like that of varicose veins. Hemorrhoids can be generally classified into two types, external and internal.

The external hemorrhoids are the ones that come outside the anus after being developed inside, whereas internal hemorrhoids are those that develop and remain inside the anus.

  • First-degree piles- they are small inflammations inside your anus that may bleed but do not come out. Therefore they are not visible.
  • Second-degree piles- they are larger in size than first degree. However, they may come out when you pass the stool and may go back on their own when you are done.
  • Third-degree- also known as prolapsed hemorrhoids, they appear outside the anus. One may feel them hanging on the anus. However, they can be reinserted with hands.
  • Fourth degree- they are large in size and remain outside the anus. To get rid of them, you need treatment or surgery.

External piles may form a lump outside the anus that can be very itchy and painful. A blood clot can form causing severe pain due to blockage of blood flow. External piles or thrombosed piles need urgent treatment.

Causes of Bawaseer

Bawaseer can occur when your anal veins get swollen. It can happen due to various reasons such as:

When you strain too much when going to the toilet. Most commonly, it happens when you have long-lasting diarrhea or constipation.

  • Increasing age- as it causes weakening of anal canals
  • Having a persistent cough
  • Lifting heavyweights
  • Straining while passing stool
  • Pregnancy- when you are pregnant, the weight on your tummy increases. Hence it can cause you to develop bawaseer.

Over-the-counter pain relievers in the form of pads, tablets, ointments, and creams to get get rid of pain and swelling in the anal region. They can help lower pain but do not use them more than seven days straight in a row as they can cause thinning of the skin of the anal region and irritation.

Pain killers can lead to further complications. Therefore to prevent them, you must use over-the-counter pain relievers topically as directed by your physician.

Your healthcare provider may also prescribe corticosteroids to lower inflammation.

Banding

The healthcare provider places an elastic band around the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting out its blood supply. It can help with all types of hemorrhoids except grade 4.

Sclerotherapy

Infrared light coagulation

It is also known as infrared coagulation, in which infrared rays are used to burn the hemorrhoid tissue.

Hemorrhoidectomy

Hemorrhoid stapling
