There are many factors that may be contributing to your hair loss. In this interview, Dr. Aisha Humaira, a top dermatologist in Karachi, explains several causes behind hair fall and hair loss treatment. She has done her aesthetic medicine from Aesthetic Academy of USA. She has 4 years of experience in Aesthetic medicine and provides a range of dermatological solutions for aesthetic concerns.

Q.1. What are the impacts of hormonal imbalance on hair?

Many of the hair fall cases that we receive have their roots in hormonal imbalance. But what kind of hormonal imbalances are we talking about? Both male and female have a hormone called DHT, dihydrotestosterone. This hormone is found in greater quantities in males rather than females. Excess of these hormones can trigger hair fall.

Similarly, thyroid issues can also cause hair loss. PCOS, or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can also be a reason for hair loss. Lastly, the lack of a protein-rich diet can also set off hairfall.

Q.2. How can we know if hair fall occurs due to hormonal imbalance?

Well, hormonal disorders of the thyroid or the ovaries (PCOS) bring with them a host of other symptoms, such as weight gain, acne, unwanted, male-pattern hair growth on the face and body. And hairfall is one of them.

We also recommend a simple blood test and inspect the blood for any infections. Some infections can sometimes cause hair loss. In addition, also get a T3, T4, TSH test that checks thyroid level.

Also, get your vitamin D levels and testosterone levels checked. Vitamin D deficiency due to poor diet may also lead to hair fall.

Q.3. What is premature greying of hair and what are the causes?

There are some myths regarding premature hair greying in our society that say that premature hair greying is caused by genetics or some allergies, such as flu, or cold.

However, we believe that nutritional deficiencies are a major cause of premature greying. Vitamin D deficiency is one of the major causes of grey hair.

Q.4. How can we stop premature greying?

Well, as I mentioned before, vitamin D deficiency can be recovered by supplements and a good diet that includes, yoghurt, eggs and milk. You can also take multivitamins and specifically, evening primrose oil capsules. Evening Primrose oil helps keep your hormones in check, thereby preventing hormone-related hair fall.

Q.5. Is there any home remedy that improves the health of hair?

For a good hair fall hair remedy, I would recommend Aloe Vera. You can extract aloe vera gel from the plant and apply it to your scalp. You can also refrigerate the gel and use it as a styling gel too.

I would also like to use my platform to warn people not to use onion juice on their scalp. The juice closes your normal pores and renders many other hair fall remedies and treatments useless.
