What is World Blood Donor Day?

World Blood Donor Day, observed every year on the 14th of June, is a global event to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood and persuade positive action from blood donor organizations and individuals to do more for the cause.

This year World Blood Donor Day is back again with the slogan “Donating blood is an act of solidarity.” The day seeks to draw attention towards the importance of donating blood in order to save lives.

On this day, people from all over the world gather to appreciate and highlight the critical contributions of blood donors and support the cause of the need for safe blood transfusions.

Why is Donating Blood Important?

Every country requires voluntary blood donations from individuals and organizations. This act ensures that people who need blood in conditions such as anemia, dengue, or in emergencies like accidents and serious injuries can get timely blood transfusions and have a better chance at survival.

However, the general perception about blood transfusions is flawed and needs to change. Most people are hesitant to donate blood voluntarily out of fear of needles, not clearly understanding what’s involved, and the lack of time, according to a survey carried out by NHS Blood.

However, the reality is that donating blood is completely safe for healthy adults. Moreover, the body replenishes the donated hemoglobin after 6-12 weeks after donation. This is why it is recommended to wait for at least 12 weeks before donating blood again.

Who Can Donate Blood?

Following are the requirements you must meet to give blood:

  • Should be between 18-65 years of age
  • Should have a healthy weight of at least 50kg
  • Being healthy at the time of donation and free from illnesses like flu, sore throat, etc.
  • Must not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Should not have any type of Hepatitis or HIV

How Can You Help The Cause?

Since donating blood is completely safe for healthy people, you can easily donate your blood every 12 weeks to help the cause. However, refer to your nearest hospital or blood donor organization to have an assessment of your physical health to determine if you are eligible for donating blood.

Scientific research has shown that donating blood has many benefits for our physical and mental health. Hence this act is beneficial for the recipient as well as the donor.
