Prof. Dr. Anjum Ilahi

I am Professor Dr. Anjum Ilahi, a senior Consultant Cardiologist and Professor of Medicine with more than three decades of clinical experience in the diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of cardiovascular disease. I currently serve as Professor of Medicine and Head of Cardiology at Al-Nafees Medical College & Hospital, Islamabad. My principal expertise is in Cardiology, including ischemic heart disease, hypertension, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, valvular heart disease, cardiovascular risk assessment and echocardiography. I have particular experience in the assessment and management of patients with complex or multiple cardiovascular conditions, where careful clinical judgement and individualized treatment are essential. My postgraduate cardiology training was undertaken in leading London cardiac institutions, including the National Heart Hospital, London Chest Hospital and Brompton Hospital. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and hold postgraduate qualifications in Cardiology, Cardiac Medicine, Internal Medicine and Transthoracic Echocardiography. I also hold specialist training in Geriatric Medicine and formal qualifications in Health Professions Education. My combined background in cardiology, internal medicine and geriatric medicine allows me to look beyond the heart alone. I routinely consider associated conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, metabolic disorders, frailty and polypharmacy when developing a treatment plan. This is particularly important in older patients, where treatment must balance clinical benefit, safety, independence and quality of life. My approach is thorough, evidence-based and patient-centred. I believe good cardiology involves not only treating established heart disease, but also identifying risk early, preventing complications and helping patients understand and manage their cardiovascular health over the long term.
