What Experts Say
Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes and widens blood vessels by slowing calcium entry into smooth muscle cells lining the arteries. Telmisartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker that stops a hormone called angiotensin two from narrowing blood vessels and raising blood pressure further.
Combining the two gives complementary blood pressure control through two separate pathways acting at the same time, which often works better than raising the dose of a single medicine alone. Telmisartan also has a long half life of about twenty four hours, which supports steady once daily blood pressure control throughout the day.
This fixed dose combination is generally reserved for patients whose blood pressure is not controlled well on one medicine by itself. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function and potassium levels helps doctors confirm the combination continues working safely for each individual patient.
