What Experts Say
Dermatologists classify clobetasol propionate as a superpotent Class I topical corticosteroid, the strongest category available for skin use. The lotion base is lighter and less greasy than an ointment, which makes it easier to spread across the scalp, hairy areas and larger sections of the body in one application.
Guidelines generally limit continuous use to about two weeks, extending to roughly four weeks for scalp psoriasis under close medical supervision. Applying more than fifty grams per week, or using it over very large body surface areas, increases the amount absorbed into the bloodstream and raises systemic risk.
Physicians usually avoid prescribing clobetasol lotion near the eyes, on the face or in skin folds, since thinner skin in these areas absorbs more of the drug. Scheduled follow up visits confirm the treatment is working and allow a planned taper before stopping to reduce the chance of rebound flare.

How to use Covate Lotion 0.05%?
- Apply a few drops directly to the affected skin or scalp once or twice daily
- Massage gently into the skin or scalp until fully absorbed
- Part the hair to apply directly onto scalp lesions rather than healthy hair
- Wash hands after application unless the hands are being treated
- Do not use for longer than two to four weeks without medical review
- Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and broken or infected skin
Drug Interactions
- Other topical corticosteroids: Combining with another steroid product on the same area raises the risk of skin thinning and systemic absorption
- CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole or ritonavir: These can raise systemic absorption of clobetasol when it is used over large or broken skin areas
- Live vaccines: Significant systemic absorption from prolonged, extensive use may reduce the immune response to live vaccines
- Other scalp or skin products: Strong exfoliants or irritant hair products on the same area can increase absorption and irritation
Risks and warnings
- Short course only: Do not use for more than two to four weeks without medical review, depending on the site treated
- Weekly limit: Do not exceed fifty grams per week applied across the whole body
- Restricted sites: Avoid the face, groin, underarms and skin folds unless a doctor specifically directs otherwise
- Children: Not recommended under 12 years without specialist supervision due to higher systemic absorption
- Adrenal suppression: Prolonged or extensive use can suppress natural cortisol production and, rarely, cause Cushing syndrome
- Skin thinning: Long term use can cause permanent stretch marks, visible blood vessels and fragile skin
- Eye contact: Keep away from the eyes since it can raise eye pressure or cause blurred vision if it enters the eye
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed and under medical supervision, avoiding the breast area while nursing
