What Experts Say
Empagliflozin works by blocking SGLT2 transporters in the kidney, which normally pull filtered glucose back into the blood. Blocking this pathway lets extra sugar leave the body through urine instead, lowering blood glucose without directly affecting insulin release.
Large cardiovascular outcome trials showed empagliflozin lowers the risk of heart failure hospitalization and slows kidney function decline, benefits that go beyond blood sugar control alone. Physicians in Pakistan increasingly prescribe it early in type 2 diabetes, especially when heart or kidney disease coexists, and monitor kidney function and hydration status regularly.
Pakistan carries a very high burden of type 2 diabetes alongside rising rates of heart failure and chronic kidney disease, making a medicine with combined benefits especially valuable. Doctors counsel patients on adequate fluid intake and genital hygiene, since the higher urinary glucose can increase the risk of yeast infections.
