What Experts Say
Montelukast sodium works as a selective leukotriene receptor antagonist. It blocks the action of cysteinyl leukotrienes released during an allergic or asthmatic response. This reduces airway swelling, mucus production and bronchoconstriction, which are the main drivers of asthma symptoms and allergic rhinitis in children.
The 5 mg chewable strength is formulated specifically for children aged two to five years, since this age group cannot reliably swallow standard tablets. Pediatricians in Pakistan prescribe it once daily in the evening, since leukotriene activity tends to rise overnight and worsen early morning symptoms. Dosing is based on age rather than body weight, which simplifies use for parents.
Pakistan carries a significant burden of childhood asthma and allergic rhinitis, largely driven by dust, smog and seasonal pollen exposure. Physicians generally view montelukast as a well tolerated add on option alongside inhaled steroids for persistent symptoms. Parents are still advised to watch for mood or behavior changes, since neuropsychiatric effects, though uncommon, have been reported in pediatric use.
