What Experts Say
Neomycin works as a bactericidal aminoglycoside antibiotic. It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria and disrupts protein synthesis, which stops bacterial growth on the skin surface. This mechanism makes it effective against many common gram negative organisms and some gram positive bacteria that cause minor skin infections.
Doctors generally view topical Neomycin as a first line option for small, uncomplicated wounds rather than a treatment for deep or extensive skin damage. Absorption through intact skin is minimal, so systemic side effects are rare with short term use. Physicians caution that Neomycin is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis among topical antibiotics, so prolonged or repeated use on the same area is generally discouraged.
Minor skin injuries such as cuts, scrapes and small burns are common across households, and an untreated wound can become infected in warm, humid conditions. Physicians recommend keeping topical antibiotic use limited to small surface areas and short durations, reserving prescription treatment for wounds that are deep or show signs of spreading infection.
