What Experts Say
Montelukast belongs to a class of medicines called leukotriene receptor antagonists. Leukotrienes are chemicals the body releases during an allergic or asthmatic reaction, and they tighten airway muscles while increasing mucus and swelling. Montelukast blocks the receptor these chemicals attach to, which calms airway inflammation over time.
Doctors in Pakistan often prescribe Repsil Tablet 10mg alongside an inhaled steroid for patients whose asthma is not fully controlled, or on its own for allergic rhinitis. It is usually taken once daily in the evening, since leukotriene activity tends to rise overnight.
This is a controller medicine, not a rescue treatment, so it will not stop a sudden asthma attack. Patients should keep a fast acting inhaler on hand and continue montelukast daily even when feeling well, since stopping early often brings symptoms back. Mood or behavior changes should be reported to a doctor promptly.
