Amstan Tablet Uses

Amstan Tablet Benefits
- Two complementary blood pressure lowering actions in a single tablet
- Lower amlodipine dose with a gentler side effect profile than the 10mg strength
- Better adherence with one tablet a day instead of two separate medicines
- Steady blood pressure control that protects the heart, brain and kidneys over time
What Experts Say
Physicians in Pakistan frequently start patients on this lower strength combination when a single blood pressure medicine alone is not enough, rather than escalating one drug to its maximum dose first. Combination therapy at moderate doses often controls blood pressure with a milder side effect profile than a high dose of either drug used alone.
The 5mg amlodipine dose paired with 160mg valsartan targets two distinct mechanisms, vessel relaxation and hormone blockade, giving many patients a smoother response with less ankle swelling than the 10mg strength. This makes it a common starting point for adults newly diagnosed with hypertension who already have other risk factors.
Doctors still recommend periodic checks of kidney function, potassium and blood pressure response, especially in the first few weeks of treatment. Pakistan's high burden of undiagnosed hypertension makes early, well tolerated combination therapy like this an important tool for long term heart and kidney protection.

Drug Interactions
- Potassium Sparing Diuretics: Blood potassium can rise to unsafe levels when taken together with medicines like spironolactone
- NSAIDs: Painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac, used regularly, can reduce the blood pressure lowering effect and add strain on the kidneys
- Lithium: Blood lithium levels can rise when taken with this combination, so closer monitoring is needed
- Other Blood Pressure Medicines: Additional antihypertensives taken alongside this combination can increase the chance of a significant blood pressure drop
- Grapefruit Juice: Large amounts can raise amlodipine levels in the blood and increase the chance of side effects
Risks and warnings
- Pregnancy: Valsartan can harm an unborn baby, especially in the second and third trimester, so this medicine is avoided during pregnancy
- Kidney Disease: Kidney function and potassium levels need periodic checks, since both components can affect them
- Low Blood Pressure: A noticeable drop in blood pressure can occur at treatment start, so standing up slowly is advised
- Breastfeeding: Safety during breastfeeding is not well established, so alternatives are usually preferred
- Heart Conditions: Caution is required in patients with recent heart attack, unstable angina or severe aortic stenosis
