What Experts Say
Ofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone family, a group of antibiotics doctors reserve for infections that have not responded well to gentler first line options. It works by blocking bacterial enzymes needed for DNA replication, which is why it covers a broad range of bacteria in the urinary tract, respiratory tract, skin and reproductive system.
Prescribers generally weigh this broad coverage against a well documented set of risks, since fluoroquinolones carry stronger warnings for tendon damage, nerve symptoms and mood or sleep changes than most other antibiotic classes. Current clinical guidance favors shorter courses at the correct dose rather than repeated or prolonged use, and it discourages combining ofloxacin with steroids in older adults because the tendon rupture risk rises sharply.
Because resistance patterns shift over time, doctors also stress that ofloxacin should be taken for the full prescribed length even after symptoms improve, and never shared or reused from an earlier illness.
