If you find yourself daydreaming about a better or a different life, or escaping from the present into the past, or you resist opportunities out of fear of the unknown, then you might want to consider a lifestyle change. In order to find a perfectly fulfilling lifestyle, you have to seek the answers from within.

You can also seek help from a therapist or a counsellor, who can help you start somewhere, and give you an idea of where to begin.

Find the type of profession that gives you joy, as a Chinese proverb says, “choose the job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life”. Here are some signs that can help you discover how you want your future to be shaped.

Table of Contents

1-Discover yourself:

The first step to lifestyle change is to discover yourself. Ask yourself who you want to be, and what is holding you back from being that; ask if you are living the life that you want to live.

If you don’t know what you want to do, then find your niche, and uncover your potential.

If you have fear of the unknown, then learn how to overcome it. You will discover a completely new version of yourself if you learn to overcome your inhibitions, and seize opportunities. There will be no holding you back once you learn to overcome your fear.

Also, check with yourself to see how you are feeling. Learn to address things that make you uncomfortable or anxious. If you don’t address them soon, they will manifest in some other form later on. On the other hand, if something makes you happy, then try to incorporate more of that activity in your life.

2-Move closer to your goals:

Once you discover what makes you happy, then set a goal in life—an achievable and tangible goal. Everyday try incorporating activities that move you closer to your goal. And if you find yourself moving away from your goal then it’s time for change. Don’t aim for radical change, rather move a few small steps towards your goal, so that the change is consistent.

3-Move away from toxic environment:

Another indicator of lifestyle change is—toxic environment. If you are surrounded by people who constantly bring you down, criticize your work, and make you feel less, then it’s definitely time for change. Negative vibes drain energy, and it is impossible to feel positive when you are not happy.

Don’t be scared to move away from the familiar; break out of the fear of the unknown and move away from such an environment. Befriend people who raise your morale, and who help you be a better version of yourself.

4-Don’t live in the past:

If you find yourself constantly reminiscing about the past, then it may be time for a lifestyle change. Focusing on the past could indicate that you are unhappy with the present. Past events can also seem less distressing because you know how they turned out.

Uncertainty is distressing and this is why the brain avoids thinking about the present. Put your energy and concentration in your present, and change your lifestyle so that you don’t constantly dwell in the past.

Lifestyle change can be distressing and if you think you need professional help, then don’t hesitate in reaching out to a psychiatrist.
